  • Letting go and letting God...

*edit* this was written a few weeks ago..i was waiting on a picture of the final product, but it still isn't finished so i will just post this and pray that it blesses you as it has me...

So, this past week i made myself a quilt for our bed...i've had the fabric for awhile now and just haven't felt motivated to getting it together..until i heard that my Grandma was going to have a quilting at her house and they needed another quilt...so i volunteered to make one =).
i'm not totally new at sewing...my mother is a great teacher and i was sewing blocks together to make comforters for the church sewing by the time i was 8 years old...i also used to piece wallhangings for Lolly's...[a local quilt and fabric shop] that i just so happened to work at a few years ago...
The cutting and piecing went well, i got it done in one day...well, almost done...the strips weren't all the same length, and my mom thought it would be just as easy to cut the one side when it was done. So, i cut and pieced, leaving an uneven side to deal with another day. I took it home and put it on my bed to see how it fit and found a few flaws in the process!! That day came and i got down to work getting it cut off straight. Or, so i thought. Before i was finished cutting it all off, we discovered that the other side that we thought was straight wasn't so straight after all. Since it was just strips it had eventually not stayed square with the first strip... When we realized just how much we were going to have to cut off both sides to make the sides straight, it was quite a bit narrower than what i wanted. And i didn't want to piece a border to add to the sides.. So we started looking at what fabric i had left and discovered what i thought was enough fabric to just add a strip going all the way along both sides, matching the last strip at the bottom. So i cut my strips and sewed them on, only to discover that they weren't long enough to leave the bottom strip on...and by taking that off it wasn't going to be long enough..
By this time i had had about all i could take...my day was going horrible and to add on top of that Ken wasn't going to be home for the night again. I felt like i had been snapping at the girls all day and finally i broke down...Why wasn't this quilt cooperating? [i know, i know, like it was its fault] Why couldn't Ken have a 9-5 job so he would be home on a regular basis and be able to spend time with us? How were we going to pay all our bills this month? I felt like i had the weight of the world on my shoulders...all brought on by a quilt that wasn't "cooperating". =/ And that's when i felt my Father draw me in his arms and re-assure me that i still had Him! He wasn't going anywhere! He would be with me that night when i had to go to bed by myself, again, He would help me with the girls and give me joy that would overflow. And then He gently pointed out how my life is like that quilt...and how when we try to piece it together by ourselves it doesn't work out right! He is/wants to be the Master Seamstress, even when we don't understand why or how, he knows how each piece fits. He knows the flaws that we find in those around us... or the things we think are flaws...the ones in our spouses, the ones in ourselves, that try as we might, we can't totally fix. We can cover up the embarrassing stuff, especially when we're around our friends and hope they dont notice, but underneath, they're still there. And just like that quilt that i had to cut more pieces for so that it would fit, He brings things into our lives that in the end make us beautiful. At the time we might not think so, especially because of the many seams holding everything together, but in the end we have a beautiful finished product...

And as i watched the ladies gathered around quilting it together, i had to think of how we touch the lives of those around us...how much effort are we putting in?

I'm crying as i write this because i cannot explain it as beautifully as the way He showed me that night...And a few nights later when i took a walk in the rain, tears running down my face as the rain fell...knowing i had to let go trying to piece my life together on my own and give the "sewing machine" over to God...to let Him finish what He's started. Letting go of my selfish desires of wanting Ken home more, and just being thankful that he has a job! Asking Him to give me the strength to face another day, trusting Him that He will provide for our needs, and learning more about becoming the help meet for Ken He had in mind when he created me...being the Mom He wants me to be, the friend i need to be, but most importantly becoming the Princess He desires me to be. Totally relying on Him, totally. Letting Him be my everything. Something i've been failing in. Being a trucker's wife forces me to be strong and mostly independent, so it's hard to let go, knowing i won't have any control over it. He desires to be my husband, my friend, my example, my daddy...because there are and will be times when i need to curl up in His lap and let Him hold me.

Pray for me! I have a long ways to go...

  • Of Weddings and Zoos...

So, last Friday night found us heading for New York for a wedding of an old friend from Bible School...by old i mean its been 5 years since i went to Bible School with her, not old as in, well, old. Ken didn't get home til like 7 so we didn't leave until 8...long story short...by 10 i was driving with 2 sleeping ppls...i was tired too... so i drove til like 1..we stopped in Erie, PA for the night...or should i say half the night =)...thank goodness for a GPS..i looked up hotels on there and got phone numbers...made finding one with an actual vacant room so much easier!!

the wedding was 2 hours from where we stayed, so we decided it would be great to just stay there another night instead of packing everything up b4 the wedding and then trying to find another vacant room...so that's what we did!

the wedding ceremony took place in an old beautiful brick church (which i failed to get a picture of)...it was beautiful inside too...even if it was quite warm!!

this is my daughter during the wedding... we weren't even moving. much. as little as possible...

the ceremony was beautiful despite the warmth..a glorious picture of how Jesus is anticipating. dreaming of. our wedding ceremony some day...the day when we will be pronounced His Bride... what a glorious day that will be!!

the happy couple when they were pronounced husband and wife

At the reception we were seated at the table with more of my Bible School friends...it was a great time catching up again!!

Wow...its been a little while since i really updated!!

    Where to start...

this pic was taken back on a saturday morning in May...she brought her shoes to me and wanted them on..even before she was dressed for the day. she "feeds" her baby like she's her mommy...i didn't even teach her. one day she started doing it and i did a double take. she must've watched Makayla do it or something!! she's so smart.

at Jon's graduation...o the goofy faces she makes....

    congrats Jon!! proud of you!

    Father's Day 2008

i am continuing my mom's tradition of taking pics every father's day...

Dad, Mom and Jon came over for lunch...

    chillin' waiting on the steaks...

    SUMMER!!

one day we had a "picnic" out on the front porch...the girls thought that was pretty awesome...

the last weekend in June Ken's family was camping at Manapogo Park...we hung out on sunday and took Kiki swimming for the 1st time!! the water was warm but the air was kinda chilly so we weren't in the water too long..

    drying off and warming up...

it had rained quite a bit so the beach area was mostly just mud...

    playin in the mud...

    my sweetheart...

playin ball with daddy... she loved it!!!

i promised the girls we'd have a water fight on a HOT day...so we did!! they played in the sprinkler awhile too.

kiki didn't really like the cold water...

    4th Of July...

Ken had a softball tournament in Topeka...they ended up being done by 1:00...they didn't play very well..=(

right now if you ask Kiana how old she is...this will probably be her response...=)

in the evening we were in a parade with our friends Marlin and Christy Stutzman...Marlin is running for Senate..

Logan drove his John Deere through...his trailer is loaded down with Tootsie Rolls...
After the parade we went back to Tobey and Erin's house and ate some leftover meat from our cookout at lunch and watched the fireworks from their house...

Quote from that evening..."You might be a redneck if....you cut down a tree and some brush so you can see the fireworks in town..."

yeah..we were rednecks that night... =) the cows even came over after we were done to see what was going on...it was hilarious!!

    Painting...
last week my brother was gone on a youth mission trip in Ohio, so mom and i ripped off his wallpaper and painted his room for him...he picked out the color and let us do the rest....it turned out awesome!!!

we striped 2 walls like this and the other 2 just solid black...yes its black...and yes its awesome!!!

i want to post about what i've been doing for Kiana's room, but that will have to be another day!!

Kiana's in swimming lessons and she has another one tonight so i better go get ready!!

  •     First of all, let me start by saying that God is good, ALL the time!! We experienced a miracle in our family this week, God's protection.....

Getting a call from your husband saying he's been in an accident certainly wasn't how i wanted to start my monday.... It wasn't a long or detailed conversation, just long enough to get me a little shook up! He said he had rolled his semi but he was ok, he was sitting in someone's pickup, using their cell phone. He was on his way to deliver his coil to Delta, OH, the same coil that he couldn't deliver on friday afternoon because the lady in the guard shack had left about a half hour before he got there so he had to come back home.  He told me he was ok, but his shoulder hurt really bad, and he mentioned he thot he might have broken his collarbone, i asked how it happened, he said he didn't know exactly, except that he got off the side of the road a little bit and there wasn't a shoulder.....then he had to go....questions and worse-case scenarios started runnin thru my head....what if his body is in so much shock that his injuries extend to far more than just his shoulder? Would he have to stay in the hospital a long time? Surgery? How would i manage to get out there and be with him since i'm babysitting....plus i have my own baby....so i quick called my mom, yes, she would stay with Kiana and Makayla. i had about 45 min. to get everyone ready and stuff lined up for mom, things written down, feed everyone breakfast, grab important papers and extra clothes, get myself ready....before i had to take Madilyn to school and leave for the hospital. He called again while i was rushing around to tell me which hospital they were taking him too....he even gave me directions, they seemed to make sense, i had been with him to Bryan, OH before Kiana was born, and it sounded familiar. He seemed surprisingly calm which helped me a lot. It helped me to be calm as well.
Of course it had to be snowing with snow on the roads making everyone drive slow. i knew i had about an hour and half to get there....but praise the Lord, the roads were clear soon after i got through Angola so i could make better time....
I finally got to the hospital, but not before my dad had went past the field where his semi was and couldn't believe what it looked like. He said Ken is very fortunate to be alive!! He's laying there in the emergency room with ice on his shoulder and face, he has quite a few cuts and bruises....So unusual to see him like this, he's hardly ever sick....We finally get the results of the x-rays...nothing is broken, just a separated shoulder - i say *just* like there's no pain involved - there is!! they can't do anything, but send him home in a sling and let it heal on its own, but we're to follow up with an orthopedist in the next few days...in the meantime, a prescription for Vycodin and no driving....After the police finally came to finish up his report and issue his citation - failure to maintain control, we were outta there! We headed over to the crash site, where i got a few pictures - i had stopped on the way over and bought one since i had forgotten mine:( The semi was already towed away and all that was left was the coil that snapped off the trailer and the huge holes where his semi landed. Later he told me what had happened... he had been fighting sleep so he decided to grab a water and some snacks. well, he thinks it must've happened when he was reaching in his cooler to get the water right in front of the passenger seat when he got off the side of the road....now i must explain, the road wasn't very wide to begin with, and it only had a 6 inch shoulder before it dropped off into the ditch. he got into that dirt there in the ditch and when he tried to correct and bring it back up onto the road, the weight of the 49,000 lb coil just took it right into a roll. he landed completely on its top, with the trailer still attached. the truck was still running so he reached up to shut it off but couldn't move his right arm. he managed with his left and then tried opening the window. wouldn't budge. so he grabbed the door latch and kicked for all he was worth. it opened! but he couldn't climb out by himself. God had a volunteer EMT drive up right then and help him out. Ken was able to use his phone to call me and he sat in his pickup while they waited on the ambulance.
There really wasn't any place to park to take pictures except on the road, so i didn't get very many. then we went to Hutch's - the towing company. When i seen the semi it gave me chills....

Good thing i wasn't with him!!

It tore the sleeper completely off the cab...

This is the driver side, as you can see the passenger ceiling is smashed down right
beside his seat... We figured out that he cut his face on his CB, we found blood on it...

We found his cell phone then, it was right on his seat, along with his Bible...

This is the sleeper, or what is left of it....

yesterday i got all these pictures, Ken's dad and brother and my brother all went along to help salvage things and dig thru stuff. Thanks guys!!

Dave, one of Ken's co-workers came to load the coil onto his trailer and deliver it.... quite interesting how they did it!!!

First they loaded it with this wrecker and half drug it out into the middle of the lot...

Did i mention it was a 49,000 lb coil? brought the front end at least a foot off the ground!

then they backed their other wrecker and hooked it up as well, ended up turning it the other way to load it then..

Ready for Dave to back up between the 2 wreckers!!

then they lifted both booms up and dave backed right underneath it...

Mission: Complete!! Finally! they even ended up getting another tow truck over to pull the back of the trailer over to center the coil.....

So now we're onto getting everything straightened out with the insurance company, working on buying another semi and waiting for God to heal Ken's shoulder....it's feeling a lot better for him, he's able to use it a little...i'm still helping him with some things like getting shoes and socks on, etc....
We're going to the doctor this afternoon, hoping everything is ok!! if it doesn't heal properly, the ER doctor told us then they have to do surgery and wire it together! so we're continuing to pray for healing....

But most of all, it has changed my outlook on life. too often i find myself in a rut....doing the same things every day, but it makes you stop and notice and be thankful for even the little things! I am treasuring these days with him here, since he isn't home very much when he's working!! Kiana is soaking up all his attention too! It's special to watch them together, especially knowing that the way the semi looks he shouldn't be here with us! Thank You Lord, for your protection and for the promise you gave us in Your Word...that You will be our Refuge and Strength and a Very Present Help in time of trouble! And again in Psalm 5:12 "For thou, Lord, wilt bless the righteous: with favour wilt thou compass him as with a shield."

God had this in His will for us...It made me think of the ancient water pots that would crack from carrying burdens..they would get thrown onto a pile..but the poor people would dig thru that pile to find the ones with the biggest cracks, because those made the best lanterns!...We can allow God to shine through our broken dreams, our broken lives, our broken hearts into the world around us, so they can see how mighty and powerful He is!!

Lord, we're asking that you shine through us and use us in the dark world around us....Let everyone know that we have Someone bigger in our lives, and its Your joy that puts a smile on our lips...Help us to be Your hands to reach out and bless those around us! Amen.

And to everyone that made it to here =) sorry its quite long! Know that God has a plan for your life! Don't take your spouse/kids/parents for granted! You never know when God will call them home!! God wasn't done with Ken here on this earth, and he's not finished with you either! Don't think that you're not worth anything, because you are! Make your life count!

Have a blessed day today!! ~Sharla
